Zanewood Community School principal Carol Rowan is teaching her students that you’re never too old to learn. At age 62, Rowan has started to learn the clarinet with other band students at the school. It was an idea Steve Reisetter, Zanewood’s band teacher, brought to Rowan’s attention—an idea she gladly accepted. “I’m always looking to connect with the kids,” she says.
Rowan started in October and practices about three times a week at school with another student, as well as roughly two hours a week at home. It’s been more than 50 years since Rowan last picked up an instrument—the saxophone, which she played for just six weeks.
Much like the students, Rowan’s notes still falter from time to time, something she takes pride in. “I’m modeling that you can make mistakes, and that it’s OK,” she says. She believes that this experience shows students that learning is a lifelong endeavor. “It’s a good thing,” she says.
