It’s been well over 200 years since the very first Arbor Day was held back in 1872. As we begin to move into summer, the landscape of Maple Grove is turning a lush green again, making it easy to see why our ancestors wished to dedicate a day to the trees.
Maple Grove celebrates this day each year with a lively event at the Maple Grove Community Center filled with all sorts of terrific activities dedicated to learning about our trees. Staff representative of the Maple Grove Arbor Committee Frank Kampel says the Arbor Day event has been there “primarily to educate people on the importance of trees and that has been the emphasis since we started having these events.”
Even if you’re lacking a green thumb, this year’s May 19 event promises to be both educational and fun with lots of activities planned for both kids and adults, including an environmental show, birdhouse building, buckthorn and emerald ash borer information, master gardeners and tree medallions. There will even be free tree seedlings available, as well as drawings to win trees.
Maple Grove’s Arbor Day event is a great way to learn more about them and the role they play in our community. The free event starts at noon and runs until 4 p.m. Maple Grove Community Center, 12951 Weaver Lake Rd.; 763.494.6365
