A Journey Beyond Beauman

A new local author pens an inspiring story.

Looking for a new summer read? A Journey Beyond Beauman fits into any beach bag and tells a tale that blends thoughtful thinking and real relationships.

Author Columbus Ezell Jr.’s main characters, Kent and Wally, might not be your typical 20-year-old and World War II veteran, respectively, but they are relatable. As Ezell’s first short story, he admits that writing and editing this 96-page book took a while, but it was worth it. “[Beyond Beauman] took two years to write,” he says, but “I enjoy writing.”

One of the coziest places to develop his characters is his home living room in Maple Grove. Sitting in front of the fireplace while his kids and wife slept down the hall meant there weren’t any disruptions. “Late nights seem to be the best time for writing,” Ezell says. At age 50, he’s excited about his next short story. His teaser is brief: “It’s going to be spicy and suspenseful.”
