Donna Pohlad is taking the home hair color experience to another level. That’s the idea behind dpHUE, a new concept she launched in September that bridges the gap between salon services and do-it-yourself box color.
“It was just one of those ah-ha moments when I realized that everybody colored their hair,” says dpHUE CEO Pohlad. “Do you go to a salon or color your hair from a box? Having only two options seems limiting.”
So she created dpHUE, a place where people can consult with licensed colorists and get customized color kits to achieve salon-quality results at home. “Our business totally compliments what people are doing in the salon and gives added benefits to the people who are doing at-home color,” says Brenda Boehler, president of dpHUE.
Customers are welcome to walk in to the Main Street location to learn about dpHUE’s line of hair color—made in Italy with 29 shades to choose from—and sit down for a “color conversation” with a licensed colorist to find the right shade and get step-by-step guidance.
Custom color kits range from $38-$43 and include the custom color, developer, an application of conditioner and two pairs of gloves along with directions. Also available for $20 is an application kit with the bowl, brush, clips and a hands-free cape to keep the process clean and simple.
The convenience of coloring hair dpHUE-style is something store manager Julie Martin, a mother of three, can attest to. “I am literally our clientele,” she says. “And it is so freeing because I can do my hair whenever I need to do it ... and be able to multitask, check my e-mail, do the laundry. I don’t have to make an appointment.”
dpHUE carries a curated assortment of professional products including Moroccan Oil, Simply Organics, and their own hair care line with color-safe shampoo, conditioner and hair oil.
For an amplified hair color experience that is fun and informative, host a color party at the Maple Grove location. Bring in appetizers and beverages and invite 6-12 people to come in for individual color consultations and to get tips and tricks from the professionals.
