A Quick Guide to Finding a Therapist

How to get someone to listen.
Writer Margot Storti-Marron is one of many area therapists who know how to listen.

So, you just want to talk to someone? Life is stressful, overwhelming at times, your marriage is on the rocks, you hate your job/ boss/ obnoxious coworker or all of the above? Maple Grove is growing and so are the number and types of therapists found here.

Counselors, psychotherapists, licensed marriage and family therapists, psychologists and social workers all see clients for mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. None of the above prescribes medications. That belongs to doctors; psychiatrists, your family doctor.

After you have a rough idea of what you want (see sidebar), how do you find one? One of the best ways is word of mouth. Ask a friend, get recommendations from your doctor. Psychology today online is a reputable internet search site. Your insurance company has a list, usually under behavioral health or mental health providers, where you will see many of the therapists listed here (see sidebar)

Still thinking, do I need therapy? Am I crazy enough to see a therapist? Will you make me lay on a couch? My answers are if you don’t know if you need therapy, ask someone who cares about you, your family doctor or call one of us. I won’t tell you to come in unless I think there is work to be done.

Am I crazy? Tough question! It’s a crazy world at times, isn’t it? We all deal with that. I think this question is really about the discomfort involved in asking for help. So listen, if you had a bum knee, would you see a doctor? Probably. So what’s so different about getting help for feeling down or irritable most of the time, or worrying so much you don’t enjoy life? I have yet to see someone who hasn’t tried most everything to deal with their problems…so I’ll put it like this: How bad does that knee hurt and how sick are you of limping?

Will they make me lay on a couch? I actually used to have a couch but I don’t anymore. But I never made people lie down on it. Not once.

How To Pick

How do I pick a therapist that is right for me? Unfortunately, this question does not have a simple answer. Here are some questions to ask yourself first:

  1. What kind of therapist do I need? Someone specializing in families, teens, children? To be seen with your spouse? To work on yourself? To help you cope with addiction?
  2. Who do I work best with? Woman, Man? (Find someone easy to talk to; a phone call or first visit is the best way to find out.)
  3. What appointment times and locations are best for me? Going to counseling when you have to drive a long way or take time off work is discouraging.
  4. What will my insurance cover? (Most plans have some mental health coverage but it varies widely.)
