About once a month for the past four years, a diverse group of Maple Grove residents comes together at Champp’s Americana for breakfast and an opportunity to hear a varying viewpoint. The conversations are not only illuminating, but “extremely civil,” says founder of the Maple Grove Critical Thinking Discussion Group, Laurie Karnes.
Karnes says that the whole point of the group is to hear others’ opinions; it’s easy to get caught up in your own mindset given how easy it is to find and hang out with people who share your point of view. But with this group, there is no debating involved.
Past discussions have ranged from Christian Science to the Minnesota Marriage Amendment, but what does the group have in store for this summer? June is centered around energy policy, while July brings Senior Fellow and economist Arthur Rolnick to the group to discuss his economic research. Speakers for August and beyond are to be decided.
