Maple Grove third grader nabs silver medal.

Local girl earns silver medal in regional competition.
Eight-year-old Sunny Choi beat 59 others to take silver in the Upper Great Lakes Regional Figure Skating Championships.

Eight-year-old Sunny Choi was one of three Maple Grove girls to compete in the Upper Great Lakes Regional Figure Skating Competition hosted last October in Green Bay, Wis. Choi, a third-grader, beat 59 others to finish second in the pre-preliminary championship round, earning her the silver medal. Her routine was performed to Disney’s “Fantasmic” and included an axel toe-loop combination, flying camel and sit-spin combination.

Sunny’s goal is to become an elite figure skater and one day become part of Team USA. Mandy Pirich, her coach, enjoys watching Sunny’s accomplishments. “She is a talented skater that exudes talent beyond her years,” Pirich says. “She was born to skate.”
