Maple Grove Photo Contest

Family moments captured in time.

Truly capturing people through a camera lens is no easy task. Capturing them airborne presents a whole new challenge. Emily Nystrom was up to it, with a little help from her family.

There was reason to jump up and down at Fish Lake last August 1, a special occasion for Nystrom and her female family members: cousins (left to right) Angela Silver, Jenny Reemtsma, Deborah Nystrom (sister), Michelle Bjokne and Brittany Henry. It was the last time the ladies would be a single gang, as Angela was getting married that Saturday and moving away. “This photo shows that little piece of childhood,” Nystrom says. “The fun, energetic, crazy little girls grew up to be fun, sometimes crazy, energetic and amazing friends.”

Nystrom, who is minoring in photography at Bob Jones University, specializes in portraits, and there’s no better subjects than her closest of kin. “When working with families, the interaction among family members is exciting to watch—and even more fun to capture on camera,” she explains.

But it wasn’t easy. Nystrom’s photo, which won first place in the “People” category of Maple Grove Magazine’s Focus on Maple Grove photo contest, was a product of trial and error. “This image is the result of several attempts to coordinate all my cousins to jump at the same time,” Nystrom says. “It was great to see them work together, determined to get a good shot. It was also fun to watch them smile and laugh throughout the shoot.”
