Erin Linder's Award-winning photo

A hard day's work led a student with a photography hobby to win first place in the 2011 Focus on Maple Grove Photo Contest.
Backyard Frog.

Remember last July? The heat index pushed past 100 degrees, there was barely a breeze, and the humidity felt as if we were literally swimming through each day. It’s no wonder that on one of these summer days Erin Linder, a junior at Osseo Senior High School, spotted a tiny frog on her deck as she was doing some yard work.

Linder doesn't consider herself a photographer, but she managed to capture a delightful image of an amphibian friend, who not only provided a nice break from a day of good old-fashioned manual labor, but also helped her take first place in the 2011 Focus on Maple Grove Photo Contest.

When she’s not doing yard work, you can find Linder studying. “I just love taking cool pictures that have different points of view,” she says of her hobby.

Linder used a Canon Power Shot SD 200 for the winning photograph. For a girl who won’t call herself a photographer, she certainly has the artistic process down, recognizing that the first shot won’t necessarily do it: “When I find a good subject to take pictures of, I end up taking about thirty shots at different angles, but only one or two turn out really good.”

As for the frog? He stayed pretty still for the impromptu photo shoot, then hopped away to enjoy the hot, humid day.
