If photography is an art form itself, shouldn’t taking a photo of a work of art be twice as artistic? No matter the ruling, Jon Kolbrek’s photo pulled off the feat in admirable fashion, earning him third place in the Activities category of Maple Grove Magazine’s 2011 Focus on Maple Grove photo contest.

Kolbrek’s subject was an art event hosted by his neighbor, Michele Holcomb, who has been teaching art to kids in the neighborhood for several years. Kids sometimes work for weeks on artwork for events that utilize different techniques, mediums and themes, with this particular showing last August fitting the theme of The City. The display, which culminated in Holcomb’s garage, includes buildings made by the kids and chalk drawings by Holcomb. Other projects for the event included graffiti and watercolor pictures inspired by artist Charles Demuth and comic book art.

“I like the bright colors in the shot, both the words and the buildings,” Kolbrek explains. “I also like that the event took place in a garage, which is fitting given the city theme. It’s rugged with the cement and the bikes on the edges.”

Sometimes the city life isn’t as far away as it seems from suburban Maple Grove.
