Sals Sisters Take Talents to the State Fair

Maple Grove’s ‘Band of Sisters’ is ready to rock the talent show.

For the second consecutive year, Maple Grove will have a voice—four of them, actually—at the Minnesota State Fair Talent Show.

Sals Sisters, a rock/pop band made up of four sisters—Kristine (17), Sabrina (14), Sandy (12) and Angel (11) Strangis—will take the stage (by the space needle) at 6 p.m. Saturday, September 3.

In their first appearance last year, Sals Sisters covered "Girl Next Door" by Saving Jane.

“It was very fun and an amazing experience for all of us,” says Kristine, drummer and backup vocalist. “I think we did very good, musically, but I feel we can improve on our showmanship.”

They’ll try to step up their stage presence while performing "Perfect" by Pink, a song Sabrina, guitarist and backup vocalist, says they chose because it “has a very good message and suits all our voices.”

Pink is also a fitting choice for Sals Sisters’ style of music. Angel, bass player and backup vocalist, compares their genre to the likes of Avril Lavigne, Evanescence and, of course, Pink.

Starting out with the name Krush, the band changed its name because of its commonality in the music scene, according to Sabrina, guitarist and backup vocalist. Instead, the girls opted to name their band after their 8-year-old brother Sal.

Sals Sisters have been playing together for five years. Like most bands that are together for that long, Sals Sisters has their bumps in the road. But unlike most bands, they have the added friction of being adolescent sisters who live in the same house.

“We have a lot of fun together, but we do fight a lot,” says Sandy, the lead vocalist who also plays the piano and some guitar. “It’s just like a normal sister relationship with the interesting twist of being in a band together.”

Sals Sisters are planning on creating their first album this winter. For more information on the band, check out their Facebook page.
