Whether you choose a bar stool or a comfy chair in the corner, there’s a seat for you at Mama G’s. “It’s a hang-your-hat kind of place,” says Greg Olsen, managing partner for the sports bar on the corner of county roads 101 and 30. Olsen has a knack for growing a business, and the fact that all his kids work there lends to the homey feel of the space, too.
Out back, customers of all ages pack the picnic tables to get a prime view of the main attraction: volleyball. It’s easy to get things bumping (pun intended) during open play in the six courts. But after 6 p.m., tournaments are the highlight. The soft sand, packed two-feet deep, draws hundreds on busy nights, but don’t worry about parking; there’s room for 144 cars.
To appease a growling stomach, try something off the new summer barbecue menu. It features half-pound burgers, giant bratwursts and a porkchop-on-a-stick for when you can’t wait for the State Fair. A new outdoor grill by the beanbag toss area makes food easily accessible in the midst of activities.
When thirst strikes, swing over to the Tiki Bar—literally. Olsen outfitted his handmade bar with swings for seats, so you can wet your whistle while lounging. Cool down with one of eight beers on tap, and catch the game on the flat-screen TV as well.
For a break from volleyball, there’s dart league games on Thursdays and outdoor live music on Fridays at 9 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. —Jessica Tam
