August is the perfect time, and Maple Grove is the ideal place, to get your swings in this summer. For all you golf enthusiasts—and even those who just like to get out and enjoy the weather and mingle—here are some ways to tee off for a good cause.
Helping Paws
Bringing a whole new meaning to the term ‘dogleg,’ the Helping Paws 13th Annual Fore Paws Golf Tournament prompts you to golf alongside your loyal, furry best friend. The 9- and 18-hole tournament, held at French Lake Golf Course August 6, offers prizes at every hole for the player with the lowest number of strokes as well as the winning teams. A boat or car valued between $15,000 and $30,000 is waiting in the wings for the winner of the hole-in-one competition.
Proceeds from the event support Helping Paws’ mission to further the independence of individuals with physical disabilities by the use of service dogs. Tee times are available from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. To register, contact Helping Paws at 952.988.9359 (ext. 12), or reserve a golf cart by calling French Lake Golf Course, 17500 County Road 81, at 763.428.4544. For more information, go to Helping Paws’ website (helpingpaws.org).
Lions vs. Rotary
The First Annual Mayor’s Cup marks the beginning of a golf rivalry—and valuable partnership—between two community organizations that have a vision to benefit vision: the Rotary Club of Maple Grove and the Maple Grove Lions. Pheasant Acres Golf Club in Rogers will host the four-man (or woman) scramble August 19, starting at 12:30 p.m., though the registration deadline is August 5.
The proceeds from the 18-hole tournament will benefit sight related organizations such as Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, Minnesota Lions Children’s Sight Clinic, the Lions Research Building at the University of Minnesota, the Minnesota Lions Macular Degeneration Research and Rehabilitation Center and the Global Eye Mission in Borneo, Indonesia. The entrance fee is $95 per golfer, which includes a cart and dinner courtesy of the Lookout Bar & Grill and a chance to win various prizes. Course events include: lowest score (participants can purchase mulligans before play), longest putt, closest to the pin, and to recognize the cause, longest drive blindfolded. To make the tournament live up to its name, Mayor Mark Steffenson is playing and will award the Mayor’s Cup plaque.
To register for the event or for more information on either organization, visit the Rotary Club of Maple Grove or Maple Grove Lions websites, or call 763.229.3339.
