HOME SAFETY – Did you know that older adults are 2.5 times more likely to die in fires than the overall population? There is a relationship between risk, gender, and race, as well. Older men are at a substantially higher risk of fire death than women, and African Americans are at much greater risk of dying in fires than whites. Older adults were more likely to be injured escaping fires than attempting to control them. (Statistics from the U.S. Fire Administration; Fire and the Older Adult; Jan 2006)

The Maple Grove Fire Department (MGFD) offers seminars especially designed for seniors, and will take a portable stove top into the community to teach about cooking safety. In October 2012, the MGFD partnered with CROSS and Meals on Wheels going to 25 homes when the meal was delivered to test and replace smoke alarms/batteries, and review fire safety and prevention information. It was the first time such a program was done in Minnesota. The Fire Department plans to make this an annual event, so watch for details in the coming months.
