Focus on Maple Grove Photo Contest Winner

Photographer Katy Humnick looks up to nature.

Sometimes discovering beauty is as simple as changing perspective. While walking through Elm Creek Park, all Katy Humnick had to do was look up. As a matter of fact, Looking Up is the title of the image that ended up taking second place in the ‘Nature’ category of Maple Grove Magazine’s Focus on Maple Grove Photo Contest.

Humnick’s favorite photo subject is nature, especially waterfalls, landscapes and close ups of flowers. “There’s just something I find inspiring about God’s creation,” she explains. “And I like to show other people that through my photos.”

The 13-year-old was so inspired by this view of the trees, she wrote a poem (also titled Looking Up) for school based on the photo:

I look up to see a canopy of colors

Staring back down at me

I feel small as I stare at

The towering trees above me

Their crisp angles reaching sharply up

To touch the canvas of the sky

The sky that’s also above me

Suddenly I feel lowly as well as small
