When the going got tough for Channon MacEachern’s daughter Paige, who was having some trouble reading in her first-grade class, they found help at Sylvan Learning Center (7928 Main St.) in Maple Grove. “Somewhere along the way, it didn’t click for [Paige],” says MacEachern. But at Sylvan Learning Center, “They figured out exactly what she was missing.”
Every program is tailored to a student’s needs, and after wrapping up four months of beginning reading instruction last February, Paige had great results. Along with doubling her test scores at school and earning a slew of perfect assignments, her new second-grade teacher told MacEachern that Paige reads on her own and double-checks her work, which other students don’t always do. The proud mom says that Paige learned skills that “she’ll be able to use for the rest of her life.”
Bret Roberts, center director, says part of Sylvan’s success is a result of students being a part of a motivational program in which they earn tokens to win educational prizes. A positive environment surrounds students, which Roberts says is a way that Sylvan ensures “students and parents have the anxiety and burden lifted from academic struggles.”
Since 2005, tutors at Sylvan Learning Center have helped everyone from preschoolers to adults in subjects including academic writing, academic reading, math essentials, advanced math and general study skills. Teens should note that there’s SAT/ACT test preparation, college prep writing and a speed reading course with an emphasis on comprehension.
