Birch Grove School for the Arts and Weaver Lake, A Science, Math and Technology School, were two of six Minnesota schools named 2016 National Magnet Schools of Excellence by Magnet Schools of America. Nominated schools are judged on their ability to raise academic achievement, provide integrated curricula and instruction, promote socio-economic and racial diversity and create community partnerships to enhance the theme of the school.
Birch Grove School for the Arts in Brooklyn Park integrates visual arts, music, dance and drama into K-5 classrooms. Weaver Lake, in Maple Grove, incorporates inquiry-based, hands-on activities that promote analytical thinking skills and problem solving for students in grades K–5.
