Lauri Miller is a resident and First Lego League team mom. Her husband Jeremy is the coach, and they have two sons on the team, along with six other members they’ve met through friends and school. In addition to the creation of their Lego robot, the team chose recycling as its project topic and they are trying to encourage more composting in District 279 schools. This fall, Rice Lake, Weaver Lake and Beacon Academy schools will do a pilot compost program. “We’re going to write a grant,” Miller adds. “We have more meetings coming up and we’re going to continue to plow ahead on this.”

Though they did not qualify for the First Lego League state tournament, Miller explains the lesson she’s trying to instill. “I told them, ‘Now it’s the real work—like any fall, you have to get back up and keeping going.’”
