Maple Grove resident Scott Dorn doesn’t take his exercise routine lightly. He’s in the gym five days a week for an hour without fail and maintains a strict diet on top of that. Dorn isn’t just your average athlete, though. In the past year, he’s garnered four different titles in the realm of professional fitness competitions.
“I originally started working out when I was a freshman in college,” Dorn says, “and I’ve been hooked on working out since then.”
The 26-year-old athlete never anticipated becoming a fitness competitor, but entered the Bodyspace Spokesmodel search last year on a whim through bodybuilding.com. After competing in the preliminary events in Los Angeles, much to his surprise, Dorn made the finals and placed third in the entire competition. He also placed second in the male fitness model division of the Model America Great North Championship, first in the WBFF Central U.S. Male Fitness Model Championship and first in the Bodyspace Fit Body Competition.
For Dorn, it was all about the basics when it came to preparing for competition—training and eating right. “You have to find out what works best for you,” he says.
After a busy year of competing, the St. James, Minn. native is taking a break from his rigid routine to work on building his own personal training business. But if he does get back into competing, he plans to keep it local.
“I enjoyed competing, but it’s somewhat stressful and takes a lot of time and energy,” he says.
Dorn’s advice for aspiring fitness competitors? Go to a show and talk to the people who are competing to find out what it’s all about.
