The Maple Grove Lions Club has been flipping pancakes for a good cause for almost 50 years, and while they raised just under $200 at their very first event in 1963, every penny of the proceeds “went right back into the community,” says Ken Kumpula, a Maple Grove Lion.
However in 2004, the Lions’ Club, which supports various charities throughout the area, decided to mix it up a bit and serve Belgian-style waffles instead of plain-old flapjacks. The switch was a hit, to say the least.
“That year we served Waffles to 881 people, which I am told is still the record for the area,” Kumpula adds.
The Lions plan to do the same this year at the Maple Grove Community Center on Sunday, October 21. Tickets cost $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and kids under 10. The delicious waffles will be hot and ready to go starting at 8:30 a.m. and Kumpula adds that you’re invited to keep filling your plate for a good cause until 12:30 p.m. “with all proceeds coming right back to taking care of needs we find in our community.”
