Last fall, Education Minnesota honored Becky Hespen as the 2016 Education Support Professional of the Year. Over the last 24 years, Hespen has been making a difference in the lives of students with special needs in the Osseo school district. She has worked with junior high and high school students, as well as those in vocational and post-secondary programs. Hespen encourages her students to seek independence by working with them on hygiene, cooking, personal finance and vocational skills.
Additionally, Hespen has served as president of her local union and oversees about 800 other education support professionals. She implemented a professional development program for education support professionals, and claims it is one of her proudest achievements.
