For kids, especially ones in college, I can’t help but recommend WhatsApp, a lightweight messaging service that sends texts through the internet rather than phone lines. It’s great if you don’t have a mobile messaging plan or are texting abroad. Those with an Android phone might be pleased to hear there’s a simple alternative to Apple’s competing iMessage. WhatsApp has rapid messaging and photo sharing abilities. If you’re having trouble finding it amongst the flood of other messaging apps, look for the green icon with a telephone symbol inside of a chat bubble. —Contributed by Luke Igel
