Maple Grove is full of great salons and boutiques so we decided to capture some of that magic with a makeover. With the directive of creating two different styles, Mainstream Boutique and Kalla Lily Salon and Spa focused on Osseo resident Bonita Ferry for a stunning transformation in line with the needs of her lifestyle. Ferry’s profession as a sign language interpreter requires her to dress neutrally in order to minimize distraction from the visual communication she facilitates. In a corporate setting she must look professional but when work is over Ferry wants to glam it up for a night out with her husband at the Dakota Jazz Club in Minneapolis for the CD release party of Maple Grove resident Cate Fierro. Three beauty experts helped Bonnie step out in style.

Jan Burmeister, stylist. Mainstream Boutique
Ferry hoped to find great styles for two separate occasions. The first setting required something dark in color and with little or no pattern. “She was hoping to find something that would work with her black boots,” Burmeister says. “We also wanted to add some new colors to her wardrobe.”
Ferry chose a heather gray tunic dress from Neesha to top off a pair of leggings from M. Rena in gray with a subtle burnout design along the sides. She and Burmeister accessorized the outfit with a chunky black necklace and earring set from Accessories Now that mirrors the black buttons on the tunic. “We added a soft green chiffon scarf to bring out the green in Bonita’s eyes,” Burmeister says. They finished with a flourish of stacked Blessing Bracelets, made with Swarovski crystal pearls and sterling silver.
“The second outfit needed something with sparkle and a great deal of wow factor,” says Burmeister. Ferry wanted clothing that would be appropriate for her evening event, but also be wearable throughout the fall and winter season. The outfit centers on a stunning wine colored jacket in super soft faux leather and suede from Mystree. They added some sparkle with a double layer chiffon hand washable sleeveless top, for a shimmery touch of elegance. “We chose a pair of dark wash, skinny jeggings from Dear John that have a great slim fit and can be dressed up or down,” Burmeister adds.
Ferry is fairly petite, so they added height with a pair of boots in khaki faux suede from Passions. These boots have a stacked heel, buckle belt and cutout detail for maximum style.
Due to the shimmery neckline a pair of lightweight, but high impact, chandelier earrings were chosen from Treska. The gold palettes and crystals reflect the color from the jacket. The look was completed with a trio of gold tone bracelets in leather, charms and rhinestones from Lesley Swar, Noblesse Collection and Le Glitz. The last minute addition of a clutch with chain strap from Big Buddha, in gunmetal faux leather with gold tone details, allowed Ferry to carry her lip gloss and personals for a night out.

Ali Thompson, advanced esthetician, Kalla Lily Salon and Spa
In Thompson’s makeup choices you can see the careful thought towards Ferry’s move from work to a play, and making the transition easy. “I saw the gray in her tunic and the olive green in her eyes and kept her makeup neutral for her profession, so as not draw a lot of attention,” says Thompson. A foundation primer smooths out Ferry’s skin and helps even out skin tone. This particular airbrush foundation lasts for 24 hours. “It lies on top of the skin and covers wrinkles,” Thompson adds.
Ferry’s eyebrows got the illusion of a lift with an eyebrow pencil, which Thompson says is a good practice on a daily basis. The brows frame simple copper tones “to make the greens and blues pop” and her lids are lined with liquid eyeliner in a dark brown/black color.
“I used a light berry color on her lips which can be worn to the office and then out at night with the addition of a liner.” Thompson recommends Aveda Uruku gloss “because it feels like a lipstick but looks like a gloss.”
Hair
Abby Ciardelli, master designer stylist, Kalla Lily Salon and Spa
Ciardelli defiantly wanted to give Ferry a hair style that was fun and noticeably different. She went for an allover color with highlights on top; “a rich brown to make it look more full and red to give it dimension,” Ciardelli says.
Ferry’s new daytime look is close and sleek with an easy transition to a nighttime looks that’s spikey with the option of flipped up ends. Ciardelli achieved the overall look by dry rolling the top layers of hair onto a brush. “She needs lots of texture to get the volume…different layers with no blunt ends,” explains Ciarelli.
The rich copper colors mean Ferry spends the winter with a deep, warm look.

Ferry’s reaction: “I felt completely pampered. Kalla Lily added a bit of a different style to my hair that I've now decided really fits my personality and is very low maintenance for the times that I'm called out on work emergencies. My makeup was very natural looking and I've taken some of the tips I've learned and incorporated them into my daily makeup routine and have received compliments.
Both outfits from Mainstream Boutique are perfect for the traveling I do for work because they're wrinkle free. I would not have chosen to wear the green scarf with the grey cowl neck sweater dress. Having that picked out by Jan was perfect for a splash of color yet not interfering with the dark solid colors that I need to wear for work.
I have a tendency to gravitate towards always wearing black so having the mauve jacket added to my wardrobe is a welcome change and can be worn with multiple items I already have in my closet.”
