3 Beers From 3 Squares

Minnesota craft beers shine at neighborhood eatery.

3 Squares Restaurant is a top craft beer bar in Maple Grove. Eighteen out of the 28 beers they offer on tap each week are brewed in Minnesota. And, because 3 Squares wants every beer to be served at the perfect temperature, they recently installed an entirely new delivery line and tap system.

If having so many choices leaves you overwhelmed, you can always ask for a suggestion from the bartender. Or consider these three craft beers you’ll always find on tap:

1) Devil’s Kettle IPA, from Voyager Brewery in Grand Marais

It is “spicy and floral in character,” says Tim “Pio” Piotrowski, head brewer at The Freehouse Brewery. “A nice bitterness without the citrus (as found in other IPAs),” he adds; 6.8 percent alcohol.

2) #1 Kolsch from The Freehouse Brewery

A German-style ale, “it’s similar to Champagne or a glass of white wine,” Piotrowski says. Three Squares general manager Heather Johnson adds that this one is very light and has a cleansing ability between bites, so it pairs well with dishes such as the pear salad or fish tacos, where it balances the spice; 5 percent alcohol.

3) Furious IPA from Surly Brewing Co.

“You always know what to expect with Surly,” Piotrowski says. “They pump this stuff out, it’s so popular.” He describes it as having a drying characteristic on the tongue; 6.2 percent alcohol.
