While driving across the metro area, you may have noticed Adopt-A-Street signs accompanied by a family or organization’s name. The program, which includes both streets and highways, began as an initiative to make the city of Minneapolis cleaner with the help of community members. Paul Higdem, his wife Julie, and their children have been volunteering with this cause for the past 20 years. Paul called the city of Maple Grove inquiring about getting involved in the program, chose a street that was in close proximity to his home and began cleaning up any trash that was strewn on their stretch of road. “I thought it would be a nice gesture on our part to do something in the area to help keep the city clean and give us a sense of civic pride,” Higdem says.
