Bunce Backyard Productions Brings Local Theater Opportunities

Bunce Backyard brings imagination and whimsy to a summer eve

In 2007, avid musical theater performers Greg, Lori, Sharayah and Trevor Bunce looked at their busy schedules and decided to acquire rights and put on their very first backyard production—Oliver!—for friends, neighbors and an audience of about 500 people. Bunce Backyard Productions grew exponentially from there. In addition to talented cast members who audition for roles in shows, hundreds of volunteers help build sets, make costumes, usher and sell concessions. It became an official nonprofit theater company in 2012, and though performances feature free admission, attendees are invited to bring donations that go toward a yearly “guest charity.”

This summer, Bunce Backyard Productions presents Seussical the Musical, directed by Sharayah Bunce with musical direction by Marina Fisher and Jonathan Horn. The show follows Horton and JoJo, two characters seeking their places in the world through mishaps and adventures. According to Sharayah, the show is about achieving dreams, staying hopeful, being a faithful friend and never giving up on what’s important. She hopes the audience members will feel encouraged by the truths portrayed in the show and adds, “I have always been drawn to shows that highlight mankind’s sense of imagination; a little whimsical [fun] is often exactly what we need to reach our goals.”
