Experts Offer Advice to Spruce up Your Home for Spring

Area experts offer preparation tips for the coming season.

We’ll soon be able to stow away the snow blower and think about sharpening the lawn mower blades. That also means our homes may need some extra attention. Sometimes they call for major fixing; other times, simply a cleaning. We’ve asked two Maple Grove real estate experts to offer simple checklists to assist in the process of organizing a spring spruce-up for your home.

Heather Winsand of Edina Realty says:

  • If an item is broken, fix it. This includes faucets, doorbells, ripped screens and more.
  • To add a pop of color before your perennials start to bloom, place pots of peonies or other hardy flowers by your front door, along with a bright new welcome mat.
  • After a long winter of shoveling snow off your front porch or deck, add a fresh coat of stain or paint.
  • Clean out all the dirt and salt that accumulated in the garage over the winter. If you are fortunate enough to have a drain in your garage, spray and squeegee the garage floor.
  • If you have a dog that tends to “burn” your lawn, put down grass seed in the areas needing attention.
  • When weather permits, turn on your in-ground irrigation system to make sure all sprinkler heads are working and there aren’t any leaks.

Donna Carlson of Coldwell Banker suggests:

  • Power wash the exterior of your house to remove grime. Check for any areas that need re-painting.
  • Harsh winter weather delivers a beating to your roof. Using binoculars, look for broken shingles and loose metal flashing, and check the attic for signs of moisture.
  • Take a walk around your home and look for signs of damage on the driveway and walkway, as well as the foundation, fences and gates.
  • Check window and door seals. Extreme cold can cause weather sealants to crack. This is also a good time to swap out the storm panels with screens.
  • Lastly, be sure to keep all receipts for recent work completed and include them in a home information book.

Does home improvement seem overwhelming? Any of these suggestions can also be accomplished by a home repair expert. Tackle the ones you feel comfortable with and let someone else take care of the others.

Donna Carlson and Heather Winsand are very familiar with homes in Maple Grove. They have both sold homes in the area for many years and have been residents since 2001.
