As Maple Grove’s self-appointed “ambassadors” to pickleball, Dan and Gail Hanka have been pleased with their stewardship in the last two years.

Each morning, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., 12-year-old Haley Briesch can be found on the ice. Donning her Lululemon warm-up jacket, she laces up her white skates and takes to the cool glassy surface to practice two to three hours a day.

Retired biologist Ron Refsnider introduces wide-eyed onlookers to the wonder of songbirds. He does this through educational bird banding demonstrations at Eastman Nature Center. Banding involves the safe capture of birds for identification, assessment and tracking.

Meet Landon Robert Wold. He was born May 7, 2013, at 6:59 p.m. and will forever be known as “baby 10,000” at Maple Grove Hospital. He is welcomed by parents Jessica and Nate Wold, who were surprised to find that they were part of this landmark birth.

Possibilities for outdoor recreation are more varied than you might imagine. For example, consider moving your backyard Frisbee game to a scenic golf course setting. Then eliminate the monotony of simply tossing the disc back and forth. Add a dose of competitive spirit.

Retired from quality assurance at Delta Airlines, Tom Prussner wasn’t born a photographer. In fact, it wasn’t until a couple of years ago that he even invested in a camera.

My husband Nate makes a mean chocolate chip cookie. They are big and gooey and full of things he’s added over the years through trial and error. I only regret that he sometimes makes them when there is no milk in the house.
