August 2017 Maple Grove Magazine

In this month's Prep Elite issue meet the fab five: a close-up on high school seniors who excel.

Much has changed in Maple Grove since 1943, when, Emily Koehler-Amann attended the old Weaver Lake Elementary school.

We all remember the less-than-stellar meals served in the school cafeteria. You might have been left sighing at the choice of a lackluster hot dish or a brown paper sack lunch, longing for the rare, once-a-month offering of everyone’s favorite: pepperoni pizza.

The end of summer draws nigh, and the prospect of starting the school year can be daunting. However, amid the back-to-school shopping and juggling of school supply lists, you’ll find teens in the Maple Grove area transforming a time of transition into a great excuse to party.

Wendy Froistad bought her Maple Grove home 34 years ago. For the first 15 years, she focused on her family and their day-to-day activities. The family’s yard was well-kept but unexceptional, a standard landscape in a nice suburban neighborhood.

What causes a young person to excel? What internal messages do they feed themself? How do they balance all the activities they are asked to juggle? What goes through their mind?

Thousands of people flock to the Great Minnesota Get-Together each year to experience the variety of foods, entertainment and shopping. Minnesota State Fair blue ribbon winners Robin and Wayne Estenson and Elizabeth Kro not only go for the food and fun—they go to win.

Since the first infestation of Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was reported in Michigan in 2002, the invasive Asian beetle has killed tens of millions of ash trees nationwide. The pest was first discovered in Minnesota in 2009.

Maple Grove resident Brett Bernard has spent more than 20 years as a teacher of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. So he knows what works during this critical age when it comes to instilling math skills into the minds of young learners.

This is the cookie that started it all. The oatmeal chocolate chip was the first recipe that Maple Grove native Annette Gustafson ever entered at a fair and won a ribbon by coming in fourth place.

Born without a green thumb? You are fashionably in luck, because the latest trend in green things is one of the easiest plants to grow (and to give): cactus. It’s not a plant we’re accustomed to seeing in Minnesota, so curiosity abounds around its ease, visual detail and interesting textures.

For the Hitchcock family, it is a tradition to enter the various sweepstakes and giveaways at the Minnesota State Fair. When Mike Hitchcock received the call saying that his family actually won a barn, he didn’t believe it.
