True Tree Celebration

Annual Arbor Day Festival returns for 31st year.
The University of Minnesota Raptor Center staff will visit this year’s Arbor Day Festival at the community center.

The annual Arbor Day Festival has been a tradition in the Maple Grove community for more than three decades. In its 31st year, the Arbor Day event will offer familiar demonstrations and activities, along with some new additions. “There are lots of activities for kids, as well as tons of information for adults; it’s for the whole family,” says arbor committee member Marilyn Arnlund.

Nature-themed activities this year include a reptile and amphibian zoo, a University of Minnesota Raptor Center presentation, bee and bird house building, master gardeners, Maple Grove wood carvers, tree inventory program information, info about invasive species, a live display of uncommon and unusual trees and much more.

Last year, arbor committee staff liaison Frank Kampel retired after 30 years. His passion has been raising awareness for residents. “A lot of people on the arbor committee are knowledgeable on tree issues,” Kampel adds. “Just providing information on tree plantings has been my favorite aspect.” Kelly Matzke has taken over as staff liaison, and the committee looks forward to another successful event this year.
