Brrrrr!

Minnesota winter pushes its way into the neighborhood.

Laura Mattioli was out on Fish Lake late in the fall, bringing her boat in to be winterized. “It was very cold out, but we still decided to take it for one last spin around the lake before we said ‘So long’ to summer,” says Mattioli.

Although winter had not yet arrived, she was prepared with her winter coat, hood up, face covered against the chilled wind. After being told by her boyfriend that she “looked funny”, she pulled out her iPhone 5 and snapped a selfie.

“I usually don’t take ‘selfies’. This is one of the rare times I decided to. I usually like to take pictures of nature or of my family and friends,” she says.

When Mattioli was younger, she worked with a photographer based in Maple Grove. Mattioli attended photo shoots, hockey games and other sports. “She taught us how to take photos and operate fancy cameras,” Mattioli explained. This is where her initial interest in photography began, and it continues to be one of her hobbies.

Who knew that a cell phone camera could capture such a great shot? This one makes you think twice about the principles of photography: Is a quality photograph the product of a great camera or the vision of a photographer with a keen eye?

Laura's Best Christmas Gift

“I got a new pair of hockey skates when I was 7 years old. As the youngest of 4 siblings and I got everyone's hand-me-downs, so when I got those skates I was incredibly thrilled. I couldn't wait to show them off at my next hockey practice.”
