Downsize

Whether it is pairing down the closet or tidying the playroom, home organizing is a “to-do” we all have. Depending on the amount of organizing needed,
it can be daunting to get started. When tackling your next project, consider the acronym HOME (hone, optimize, materials and expertise) to help you reach your organizing goals.

H: Hone down your possessions. Did you know, we typically only use 20 percent of what we own? Start reducing your clutter by going through dated, expired, worn and damaged items. Then, move toward items you do not use. Next, get rid of things that no longer “spark joy,” coined by home organizer Marie Kondo.

O: Optimize space when organizing. Be sure you are making use of all vertical space. Add another shelf in the closet. Consider using the backs of doors with an over-the-door shoe organizer, or install magnetic boards. Don’t forget about under bed storage.

M: Finding the right materials to organize your items is key. Determine if you would like clear bins to easily see the contents inside or opaque to hide the items. Next, find proper labels to help identify each container.

E: Ask an expert. Consider working with a professional home organizer.
