Focus on Maple Grove: On Top of the World

Mother’s photos win three Focus on Maple Grove awards.

Mindy Gallagher loves spending time with her two daughters as much as she loves taking photos of their lives to keep those moments alive.

“I love capturing my children living everyday moments, especially when in nature, and when the light and angle and composition come together in the photo, that’s pretty much icing on the cake for me,” says Gallagher, a Maple Grove resident.

Gallagher entered a few of her photos of her daughters Laeney and Fiona, who are 10 and 8 years old respectively, into the 2016 Focus on Maple Grove’s photo contest and won two second-place awards, as well as a third-place award in the People & Families category for her photo of Fiona named “On Top of the World.”

Gallagher took this photo with a Nikon D40x at Dehn’s Pumpkin Patch on a fall day watched Fiona climb to the top of a haystack.

“When she got to the top she had this big smile on her face and said, ‘I’m on top of the world!’” Gallagher says.

Since mom was squatting with the camera at the bottom of the haystack, her daughter did look like she was on top of the world, when in reality Fiona wasn’t very high up at all before jumping into the hay pile below.

“I like this photo because from the low angle from which it was taken, it kind of looks like she was balancing on one foot, high up in the clouds,” Gallagher says.
