Last November, Maple Grove Magazine featured local book club Read Winers. This month, they invite readers to participate online in their latest book discussion of the novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. The storyline follows Ove, a cantankerous man whose world is flipped on its axis when a loud, unruly family moves in next door.
Ove doesn’t stray from routine and his neighbors see him as nothing but bitter. However, beyond his stoic exterior is a story of sadness. When a couple moves into the neighborhood with their two young, chatty daughters, Ove—and the neighborhood—will never be the same.
“A charming debut…You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life. You’ll also want to move to Scandinavia, where everything’s cuter.” —People Magazine
“Readers seeking feel-good tales with a message will rave about the rantings of this solitary old man with a singular outlook. If there was an award for ‘Most Charming Book of the Year,’ this first novel by a Swedish blogger-turned-overnight-sensation would win hands down.” —Booklist, starred review
“Poignant and unpredictable, Backman’s book is filled with many twists and turns, as well as enjoyable characters and humorous situations.” —Columbia Tribune (Missouri)
