Kaitlyn Walters Wins Third Place With Her Photograph “Sunset at Rice Lake”

Kaitlyn Walters has been part of the community since the age of 6. Recently married, she and her husband chose to stay close to home. When asked what she likes about Maple Grove, Walters explains the way she’s watched the community grow. “When I was a kid, it was a lot smaller,” she says. “I’ve been able to see everything bloom.”

Walters teaches art in St. Michael, and says her passion for photography grew after college. She took on a long-term high school substitute position. “I had never taken any photography classes and I had to teach a film-based photo class,” she explains. “I learned along with the kids.”

Since discovering her passion for capturing moments in time, she mostly sticks to landscape and nature. She emphasizes the way photography allows her to witness life’s special moments. “I like to capture beautiful moments before they’re gone; it’s about noticing them as they pass by.” Her photo, “Sunset at Rice Lake,” was awarded third place in the Wildlife/Nature category of our Focus on Maple Gove photo contest. Walters had been trying to document the sunset moment for some time. “I had just recently discovered that area back there on the lake off of 94,” she says. “I thought it would make a beautiful sunset [shot].”

For this photo, Walters used a Canon EOS Rebel T5.
