On her first trip to a U.S. grocery store, Kavita Mehta, “was pretty sad” to discover that while food was in abundance, it was also filled with additives and packaged in places far away from her new home in Minnesota.

St. John's Evangelical Lutheran celebrates its 150th anniversary on October 5 and 6. That Saturday, the church will host a musical event and social hour. On Sunday, the church will hold celebratory Divine Worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m., and hosts the Rev. Matthew C.

 

Sarah Jackson said “yes” to helping with an area event to raise funds for cancer victims but didn’t truly know what she was getting herself into. A National Honor Society student and Maple Grove High School hockey team member, Jackson was looking to collect service hours.

 

Maple Grove resident Lisa Beckendorf is a 15-year pancreatic cancer survivor—one of only 6 percent who survive this deadly diagnosis.

 

Kidstop students at Maple Grove’s Weaver Lake Elementary School partnered with the University of Minnesota Gophers this summer to raise funds to distribute sports equipment to communities in over fifty countries all over the world to help provide sports to impoverished children.

 

Maple Grove residents Madeline Orzeske and Anisha Dharnipragada were honored to attend the 2013 Honeywell Leadership Challenge Academy at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama this year.

 

The Gold Award is the highest award that a girl can achieve in Girls Scouts and requires a significant time commitment for an 11th- or 12th-grader. More than 100 River Valleys Girl Scouts earned their Gold Award this year.

 

Carol Brendal was a student patrol in sixth grade. All grown up, Brendal still helps kids cross the street. She’s been a crossing guard for seven years, guiding students through the intersection of 101 and 89th on their way to and from Rush Creek Elementary School.

Everyone has a soft spot for foods of the wrapped, rolled or stuffed variety.

 

Watching Wren was awarded first place in Maple Grove Magazine’s Focus on Maple Grove photo contest. It is also the first photograph amateur photographer, Brigid Gress, captured with her Nikon P510. Gress loves taking wildlife pictures and purchased the camera for its extended zoom.
