A winter day would usually start with getting to the coffee machine as swiftly as possible. Now that he’s retired, former fire chief Scott Anderson can brew his coffee whenever he wants, and put his feet up in front of the fire instead of fighting it.

Sally and Jeff Gardner, vendors at the Maple Grove farmers market, have been making different pretzels for nearly 10 years. They offer samples with a side of honey mustard. However, they sell four to five other homemade varieties.

Joshua Borchardt grew up near Weaver Lake, exploring old farmhouses and abandoned buildings on walks with his dad and dog. When trails were added nearby, he’d grab his bike, a fishing pole and a walkie-talkie to venture to farther, more interesting spots.

Dr. Umbreen Hasan’s life changed in October 2016 after she was involved in a terrible car accident on her way to a conference. “I was unconscious and had head injuries that I didn’t know about at the time,” Hasan says. “I had suffered a severe concussion.”

Sterling Taylor has always had the ability to talk people into anything. In fact, the gregarious 72-year-old retired veteran landed his current job as pool attendant at Life Time Fitness by convincing general manager Theresa Ohme to let him fill in for a few shifts.

Two Maple Grove Senior High graduates play at the college level. Having graduated in 2013, Jordan Gross played hockey for Notre Dame. Jake Wienke graduated just a year after Gross and went on to become the receiving football captain for South Dakota State University.

Taylor Sieve graduated in the top ten percent of her class at Maple Grove Senior High in 2016 but didn’t spend much time at school because she practically lived at the dance studio.

After just one year of learning the Greek language, Pranav Rupireddy, currently a junior at Parnassus Preparatory Charter School, was one of two students worldwide who earned a perfect score on the National Greek Exam last year. Rupireddy enjoys the language because of its difficulty.

Once upon a time there were enchanted kingdoms inhabited by elves who overcame evil creatures during the night. Today these tales come to life in the elf houses lovingly handcrafted by long-time Maple Grove resident, “Grandpa Don.”

At 10 years of age, Trevor McGuire is representing the United States in the World Karate and Kickboxing Commission. With 36 countries participating, Trevor looks forward to all the aspects of his trip to Orlando, Florida, November 4-11.
