Giving Back

Wastebasket Revue (WBR) first started in 1967 when Osseo district music teacher/ supervisor Duayne Malewicki suggested finding a unique way to raise scholarship funds for graduating seniors.

The women in the Vino 16 wine group have been meeting monthly for more than ten years, tasting wine and sharing life experiences. In recent years, the group decided to contribute a few dollars each month toward helping out families in need.

Since the opening of Maple Grove Hospital five years ago, the Knitting Grandmas have been crafting hats for each and every baby born there. Founded by Molly Sullivan and two other women, the group of about 50 knitters is now co-led by Jerry Enders and Kim Wood.

Dave McCarty, the current pastor of outreach and mission at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, took his first trip to the Dominican Republic in 2001 (during his tenure with a different church).

A few years ago, Osseo resident Elie Bengston and her husband where traveling in Door County, Wisconsin when she saw a mosaic that inspired her to start a similar project in her own community.

As a finalist for Allstate’s Ray Lynch Community Service Award, Greg Sniezek received a $2,000 grant that he donated to CROSS, a local nonprofit, to further its efforts in providing for those in need.

Since being featured in our May 2014 issue, interior design non-profit Designing Dreams has been incorporated in four states.

When it comes to having an effect on the world, some set their sights on the neighborhood. Others step out immediately to foreign countries and the unknown. Meet three young adults who have no problem setting the travel bar high.

Many men, women and children across the globe have shoes on their feet this year, thanks to the combined efforts of the Maple Grove Girl Scouts and the Soles 4 Souls organization. Every third week of June, the girls meet for fun at Lights and Lakes Day camp.
